The Gas Burner Ionisation Probe is a ceramic-insulated sensing component designed to detect and continuously monitor flame presence in compatible gas burner systems.
The probe operates using the flame-ionisation principle. When a stable flame surrounds the exposed metal sensing rod, a small electrical current passes through the flame to the grounded burner body. The burner controller monitors this signal to confirm that combustion has been established.
If the flame signal is lost during operation, the burner controller initiates a safety shutdown and closes the gas valves. This helps prevent unburned gas from continuing to enter the combustion chamber.
The long white ceramic sleeve electrically insulates the internal metal conductor from the burner body. The ceramic construction also provides resistance to the elevated temperatures present around the combustion head.
The exposed metal rod is positioned within the flame area to provide reliable sensing. A metal terminal at the opposite end connects the probe to the flame-signal cable leading to the burner controller.
Probe length, ceramic dimensions, exposed rod length and terminal design vary according to the burner model and combustion-head arrangement. The replacement probe must match the original component’s physical configuration and mounting position.
Typical applications include natural-gas and LPG burners installed on commercial and industrial boilers, steam boilers, hot-water boilers, furnaces, ovens, hot-air generators, radiant-tube heaters and process-heating systems.
A contaminated probe surface cracked ceramic insulator, poor grounding or incorrect positioning can weaken the flame signal and cause intermittent burner lockout. Regular inspection and cleaning help maintain dependable flame supervision.
